Are you planning a trip to Sanibel Island and worried about encountering no-see-um bugs and mosquitoes? These tiny pests can put a damper on your outdoor activities. But don’t fret! In this blog post, we’ll explore effective, store bought and natural remedies to help you fight off these bothersome insects, so you can enjoy your time on the beautiful island. Here’s what we like:
-
- Citronella Candles and Oil (approx. 100 words): Citronella is a popular natural repellent that acts as a deterrent for both no-see-um bugs and mosquitoes. You can find citronella candles and torches at local stores on Sanibel Island. When lit, the scent of citronella masks the carbon dioxide and body odors that attract these pests. Additionally, citronella oil can be applied to exposed skin to enhance its repellent effect. Remember to reapply it every few hours for maximum protection. We like this product

- Mosquito Nets (approx. 80 words): Mosquito nets are an effective way to create a barrier between you and the insects. When sleeping, use a fine-mesh mosquito net around your bed to keep mosquitoes and no-see-um bugs at bay. Ensure that the net is properly tucked in and doesn’t have any holes. This simple and inexpensive solution will provide you with a peaceful night’s sleep without the annoyance of buzzing insects.
-
- Natural Repellents (approx. 120 words): Sanibel Island offers several natural repellents that are safe for both humans and the environment. Essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, and tea tree oil have mosquito-repelling properties. You can dilute these oils with a carrier oil and apply them to your skin. Alternatively, there are natural repellent sprays available that contain a combination of essential oils to effectively repel bugs.
-
- Dress Appropriately (approx. 80 words): When exploring Sanibel Island’s outdoors, it’s essential to dress appropriately to minimize exposure to no-see-um bugs and mosquitoes. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing that covers your arms and legs. These pests are attracted to dark colors, so opt for lighter shades. Tucking your pants into socks and wearing closed-toe shoes will provide an additional layer of protection.
-
- Avoid Peak Activity Times (approx. 70 words): No-see-um bugs and mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk. If possible, plan your outdoor activities accordingly. Opt for enjoying the island’s beauty during other times of the day when these pests are less active. This strategy can significantly reduce your chances of encountering them and enhance your overall experience.
- If you own a home in Sanibel you might want to consider spraying the property around the house with a pet and environmentally safe product called Wonderside eco-friendly bug and mosquito repellent. Powered by cedar oil, this plant-powered formula is proven to kill and repel pests. 32 ounces gets you about 5,000 sq foot depending on water pressure and how fast you walk while spraying. This is a safe and natural pest repellent that kills mosquitoes, ants, fleas, ticks, roaches, flies, scorpions, chiggers, crickets, chinch bugs, japanese beetles, no-see-ums, gnats and more. It is a safe alternative to conventional pesticide sprays, baits, ant granules, zappers or foggers. We tried this recently and it seemed to work fairly well. Believe me, bugs must love my sweet blood and I usually leave Sanibel full of bites. I don’t know how long the spray will last because we don’t live on Sanibel full time so I’ll report how well it worked next time we visit. For more information, click here
